Just
a little news today, but it's something that should make all
you mp3 lovers happy. The overclocking
page has some minor updates, all to do with BX cooling and
taking a hacksaw to your Orbs - not as painful as it sounds.
If you're a fan of dual action (and aren't we all) you have
probably visited the Mecca of BP6 owners, BP6.com
But did you know that GameSquad are also working on a sister
site devoted to the new dual Pentium motherboard from Abit?
It's rather originally called VP6.net
and as soon as it goes on-line I'll let you know. If
it's half as good as BP6.com then it will be a goldmine of
information, look forward to seeing it. Happy
Halloween!
Napster team up
with BMG - the big breakthrough?
In what could
be just the breakthrough that Napster has been looking for,
German music giants BMG broke ranks with the big five
companies that have been pursuing Napster through the US
Courts. This has shattered the alliance of Sony,
Warner, EMI, Universal and BMG - indeed BMG have stated they
will not only be dropping their lawsuit, they've also asked
the other record companies to join them in working with
Napster instead of trying to shut it down:
"We
invite other record and publishing companies, artists, and
other industry members to participate in the development of
a secure and membership-based service," BMG chief
executive Thomas Middelhoff.

AMD 760 chipset
review
There's
a new article on the DDR supporting chipset that's making
AMD fans sit up and take notice. As you'd expect from AnandTech
no stone is left un-turned. Before you go and plunge
headfirst into all the details have a taster:
"The
AMD 760 chipset helps to alleviate this problem by
introducing the first ever support for Double Data Rate
(DDR) SDRAM on an Athlon platform. By transferring
twice as much data per clock (once on the rising edge and
once on the falling edge), DDR SDRAM effectively offers
twice as much memory bandwidth as an “equivalently
clocked” Single Data Rate SDRAM solution."
Unstable system?
Not any more
Overclocked
your PC? Getting freezes, lock-ups and crashes?
Think you may have overcooked things a touch? You
haven't read the RipNet overclocking
page have you! But to get even more details on how to
stability test your PC you could do a lot worse than visit
Speedy3D and check out their article
Here's a snip:
"While
there are many programs, and methods for testing stability,
these listed programs have been proven effective. Stability
is one of the most important aspects of a computer, after
all if the fastest computer is unable to run programs for an
extended period of time, what real use does it have?"
You have to
admit, he's got a point there. More tomorrow, bye for
now.

Plenty of news today, and a
few more adjustments to how the site looks. The theme
continues to evolve, or perhaps I should say mutate?
Here's some news from around the Net...
"Although
USB 2.0 promises a great deal, what with its greater
transfer rate, the need for it is little to none at this
point. Although there are some (few) uses for such a fast
transfer rate for peripheral devices, at this point you can
easily accomplish that by spending your money on getting a
firewire device in the first place. Perhaps in 2001 when USB
2.0 is officially released there will be more devices that
would need this, though I doubt it would be anything
firewire couldn't handle. If you have a need for the
technology, find a cost effective solution, but otherwise
just wait until you buy or build a new computer. By that
time the motherboard should just come standard with the
support."

The
Motherboard Monitor download link on the overclocking
page is now fixed; there's also a new version available.
Haven't installed it yet, but when I do I'll let you know
what I think. More news later!
I've done a
few more minor page adjustments, but have spent most of
today working on the dual CPUs
page, which I've finally got uploaded. Well worth a
look, even if I say so myself.
Europe to
investigate legality of RIP
Headline news
at The
Register Fortunately it's not me they're talking
about, but rather that Tony Blair's plans to monitor your
e-mail are being closely looked at by the European
Commission. The Regulation of Investigatory Powers
(RIP) Act would allow the Government to intercept e-mail
traffic, and there are some serious worries about how this
would be controlled. Try putting a few keywords like
"Semtex" into your messages and wait for men in
black to come knocking (very noisily I'd imagine) on your
door...

Well
here it is, RipNetUK's first home grown review. Okay
so it's not a brand new product but I'm still waiting for
the lottery win. Of course if you're a retailer and
have a new product that you'd like to see reviewed on this
site then drop me a line here
Thanks to everyone who's called in at RipNetUK, we've
notched up around 1,000 visitors since going online at the
end of September. If you like what you've seen so far
keep coming back, there's still lots to be done and I will
keep trying to add something new daily.

Microsoft hacked
The bigger
they are, the harder they fall. Big news today was
that Microsoft got hacked (or more correctly, cracked),
although they maintain that nothing really valuable was
broken into. Riiiight ... but they've still called in
the FBI to investigate. Some reports are saying that
this incident, being described as industrial espionage, has
it's source in Russia. Well I suppose there are a few
precedents there. Apparently Microsoft's security may
have been breached up to 3 months ago, and they aren't sure
about the integrity of anything produced since then.
This seems to have been a somewhat sophisticated attack
rather than some loner showing how clever he is, which is
giving MS even more cause for concern. When was it
that Win Me got released? More details here
at The Register.
Still upgrading
to Windows ME?
Well if the
thought of Mr. Putin's security services (as opposed to Mr.
Blair's) reading all your e-mail hasn't put you off taking
the plunge then you'd better read this article from MaximumPC
It covers some of the known installation problems with the
new OS, and points you toward some drivers and patches.
Here's a taster:
"Driver
compatibility and support is probably the biggest problem
associated with Windows Me. In the past month several
vendors have come up with drivers - for example, Creative
has released Live!Ware 3.0 and drivers for users with a
Sound Blaster sound card........but there are clearly plenty
of people out there with hardware that wasn't supported from
day one, and who still want to run Windows Me. So either the
vendors screwed up by not using the two months they had
before Windows Me hit the shelves, or Microsoft did not
prepare the vendors enough."

Annihilator 2
64MB GeForce2 Ultra
Remember when
graphics used to come from a chip built into your
motherboard? Nowadays a 3D card will probably have as
much, or more RAM than an entry level PC. Anandtech
put Creative's latest under the microscope. It's got
64MB of RAM, which is also DDR (well of course). Take
a look and get your cheque book ready. You're
going to need a BIG monitor to do this card justice! |

Not entirely happy with it yet so stand by for some more

unfortunately meant that there's not much news for today, as
I want to go and watch The Sopranos ... Badda Bing!

at the same speeds as the AOpen drive. Hope to post a

the meantime drop in on 2cpu.com

my hard drive so expect to see that posted soon, hopefully
by tomorrow evening. Thanks again to Bill Hillman for
putting it together.
Apple G4 Cube
Okay I know
it's not a PC but unless you've been living in a hole
recently you can't fail to have seen pictures of this,
possibly one of the most gorgeous pieces of hardware on the
planet. Well I think so anyway. However the
price does tend to take some of the shine off it; in
an attempt to boost poor sales Apple UK are offering anyone
who buys a Cube with an Apple monitor £250 back - this is
actually higher than the $300 rebate being offered in the US
(and that must be something of a rarity). But in the
same interview Apple Chief Exec Steve Jobs stated that
cheaper Cubes will arrive here next year. Worth the
wait maybe? Full details are at The
Register

Pentium
4 price cuts
The
Register have also got hold of some leaked figures on
planned release prices for Pentium 4s next year. For
example the 1.4GHz chip will market at $625, as against a
projected price back in July of $895. That's a hefty,
and very welcome, price cut. More on this story here

bear in mind that TweakTown talk about editing your

CPU
coolers review
DansData
take a look at a bunch of CPU coolers. If you
want to overclock your chip it's well worth investing
some of the money you didn't give to Intel / AMD in
some beefier cooling. This guide gives you some
pointers, here's a taster :
"And
then, there's overclocking. If you're one of the merry
few that run your CPU faster than stock, a good-sized
cooler is an essential accoutrement. Modern CPUs
actually run cool enough that just scraping the
cheapo thermal pad off a stock cooler and replacing it
with a smear of heatsink grease is enough to deal with
many processors' cooling needs. But when you're really
increasing the heat output by goosing the CPU voltage
to make it stable at an elevated core speed, another
few bucks for a big cooler's a small price to pay for
the performance of a processor five times as expensive
as the one you bought".
Intel vs.
AMD, seconds out, round four...
The
processor giants continue to slug it out. AMD
seem to have a distinct advantage at the moment, but
what does the future hold? (Wish I knew, I'd be
off to buy a lottery ticket - not that it would change
my life at all you understand). Anyway back to
the article. Aces Hardware have an in depth look
at the relative merits of Intel's Pentium 4 and AMD's
new Mustang core for the Athlon. The full
story is here. Not one for the techno-phobes....

RipNet's
first on-line review
Must
send out a BIG thank you to Ty at Savage2000.com
for posting this review on his site, the first one
RipNet has had. Okay I know it's kind of
bragging but let me share it with you :
"I'd

like its going places. I suggest you check it

I may be blushing. Thanks a lot Ty!
Get ready
for a top source for overclockers' goodies
Okay so
you're smart enough to check out the various price
index sites if you want to buy some new hardware.
But they're all based on one country aren't they,
usually the States. Pretty soon all that's going
to change, when OCPrices.com becomes fully functional.
They plan to list global prices of hardware that'll
make your mouth water, along with guidelines on
importing and tax regulations. It's a big
project and they've asked me not to publish a link
until the site is absolutely ready to roll, but rest
assured you'll hear about it here first.

The

although there's not much on it yet. I've also
added the Darwin Awards and some news to the News

articles have now been consigned to the archives
Now I know there are
quite a few dodgy links on the site as I change the
look of things and add new pages. I'm trying to
clear them all as I go but if you spot any please let
me know, I may have missed them - and thanks for all
the e-mails I've received about how the site is going,
they're very encouraging!
Release of
the 1.13GHz Pentium III cancelled?
The
release (or I suppose re-release) date for this CPU
has gone back, and there are now suggestions that by
the time it's ready it will be so far behind the
competition, and also the Pentium 4, that it may never
see the light of day again. Where do chips go
when they die I wonder? And what competition can
they possibly mean? Here's a subtle clue...

at The Register
FreeServe
- more access problems
Another
story from The Register, this time about the continued
failure of UK ISPs to look after their customers.
I was a LineOne user and enjoyed my free access,
although I paid for it in a way since my telephone
connection through Quip was bloody awful (it was a
condition of the free Internet connection to use their
telco for voice calls). And then LineOne pulled
the plug as too many people were using the service.
Call me stupid if you like but I'd have thought they
could see that one coming.
Well
FreeServe are now doing a similar job on their
customers. They have stopped any more sign ups
for unmetered access, blaming heavier than anticipated
usage of the service for the suspension (which sounds
strangely familiar), after existing customers were
unable to dial in. When will the ISPs learn?
Thanks to The
Register for another story!
Get your
cool case here
There's a new supplier
of modified cases on the Net, and surprisingly enough
they're from the UK! Cool
Case Mods can supply you with modding kits to add
windows to your case, so people can see all that
expensive hardware you've crammed inside (in my case
they could get a glimpse of my pair of Golden Orbs (!)
- I think Frankie Howerd would have liked this
article), neon lights to make your PC look like an
extra from Close Encounters, or anything else your
heart desires - well almost. If you don't feel
up to doing the work they will supply ready modified
cases, as well as fans and so on. Pay them a
visit and support another UK business!
Overclocking
the new Duron 800
AMDs
Duron 800 may have only been on general release for a
few days but people are already discovering it's
potential for overclocking. All this news of
superfast AMD chips makes me feel a little sad as a
Celeron user - well until I can persuade my wife that
we really NEED a new PC running a pair of 1GHz +
Athlons that is.
In the
meantime HardOCP have been playing with a Duron,
here's a snippet :
"As
far as technical aspects, the 800MHz chips are being
manufactured with a new core stepping, the Duron Model
3. What makes this model different from the previous
Durons is the ability to house 128k of on-die L2 cache
sometime in the future. The Duron is currently at 64k,
should AMD make this next step, that would put the
Duron right in there at the same level as a Celeron,
with 128k total L2 cache. Now while we are comparing
L2 Vs. L2 quantity, if we look at the performance
aspect of this, it MIGHT be very feasible to think
that the next logical progression of the Duron (if
there is one) would put it on a performance level with
the current PIII architecture."
Follow this link
for the full article.
SharkyExtreme are in on
the action as well. This is what they have to
say :
"We'll
show you that it's really quite easy to overclock any
old Duron and/or Athlon "Thunderbird" and
we're not forcing you to do it anyway. It's rare that
you can get a little something extra for virtually
nothing, thus we figured that the point of this
exercise could be to show you just how easy it is if
you're an AMD Duron/Athlon user not yet in the know.
If you are an overclocker, a Kyle Bennett fan (lyrical
gangster at HardOCP.com)
and a general “goo-loving” (goo= silicone heat
transfer compound) CPU-burner then read on…."
Full story here

As
you can see I'm still fiddling about with the way the
site looks. Still not sure if it's right yet,
let me know what you think. I've also done some
work on the SETI and overclocking pages, and I'm
hoping to add some Darwin Awards stuff to the News
Of The Weird page. In the meantime here's
some interesting news for dual processor
enthusiasts...
Abit VP6
Preview
HardOCP
(they don't know what the OCP stands for either) have
got hold of a pre-production version of this board,
which is the Pentium compatible replacement for the
dual-Celeron BP6 - which this page is being produced
from actually. Here's a snip of what they made
of it:
"So
who really needs one of these anyways? Well
surely there are a big group of folks that run dually
CPUs simply for the sake of doing it. You must
run a Linux or Win2K OS to even take advantage of SMP.
If you want to stick with Win9X or WinMil, SMP will do
you absolutely NO GOOD. 3D Studio Max and
Photoshop are a couple of programs that are written to
take advantage of dual CPUs, and those programs can
take advantage of the power of both processors at
once. Many users will find that the running of
multiple applications at once will be greatly helped
out by dually CPUs. Of course, server
applications can benefit from the dually CPUs too.
However, don't think that getting yourself a SMP rig
is going to make your Quake 3 frame rates jump through
the roof, because it simply is not going to happen.
Almost no games are optimized for dual CPUs, but
hopefully that is something that will be changing one
day down the road. (While Quake 3 does have the
ability to take advantage of dual CPUs, it will not
double your frame rates, but only bump them by about
10%.)"
Take a
look here
for all the details and piccies.

Still
changing the look of the site as you can see.
Frames have now gone after a lot of people said they'd
rather see the back of them! Expect more changes
as I'm still not completely happy with things yet -
for example this is the only page I've had time to
tweak so far...
But I'd
imagine you're really here for the news aren't you?
Here it is.
AMD
continue skywards...
The
Register have picked up on a rumour that AMD are
preparing to release a 1.33GHz Athlon in December.
Unsubstantiated so far, but maybe you can expect to
see Intel execs leaping from tall buildings fairly
soon. The full
story lives here.
Buyers'
Guide
You can
rely on AnandTech for accurate and up to the minute
information. They have a new buyers guide out,
check it before you buy! Prices and availability
are geared to the American market but these people
know what they're talking about, and if they recommend
a piece of kit you can be fairly sure it will be a
good bet. Get the latest info on the latest
goodies here
Not
much today I know, but it takes a techno-phobe like me
a long time to update the look of these pages...
expect some updates to the SETI and overclocking pages
over the weekend.

1.2GHz
Athlon and 800MHz Duron reviewed
On 13
October we carried the news that these chips, although
not officially released, were available in the States.
Well now you can read a review of them as well.
Both AnandTech
and FiringSquad
have had a good look at these CPUs. They're
fast, cheap, and available - Intel must really be
smarting. Now that quality motherboards are also
starting to appear the idea of building a dual Athlon
system is beginning to have more and more appeal...
I'm
planning a slight revamp of how the site looks, expect
to see some results in the next few days. Until
then I'm afraid you'll just have to put up with my
painfully slow progress.

October 2000 |
Checked
the UK prices of the Athlon Thunderbird 1.1GHz and the
ATI Radeon 32MB. PCIndex
list the Athlon at £336 and the Radeon SDR at £140,
whilst the DDR version will set you back £175 (all at
Dabs). With an
exchange rate of around $1.50 to £1 that means you
are paying almost double for the Athlon here, whilst
the Radeon goes for the equivalent of £110 in the
States. Nice to see we're not getting ripped off
then....
I've
also tidied up a few of the pages, and added some more
stories (all true of course - only the facts have been
changed) to the News
Of The Weird page. Check it out!
Well
that's your lot for today I'm afraid - apparently it
was my wife's birthday yesterday so we're off out for

US
hardware prices
Saw
some interesting figures at SavageZone
today. 1GHz AMD Thunderbirds for $281 and ATI
Radeon 32MB graphics cards for $165 (as of 14
October). Haven't checked the UK prices for
these but my guess is they'd be considerably higher.
Anyone looked into the costs of importing this sort of
stuff? If so I'd be very interested to hear from
you.
Windows ME
- more details
Geek.com
have a detailed look at Windows Millennium. In a
nutshell it has added stability over Windows 98, at
the cost of slightly reduced performance. You
also get Internet Explorer version 5.5, Windows
Media Player 7.0 and MSN Instant Messenger (all
available as free downloads), Windows Movie Maker (a
direct challenge to the Apple iMac and it's iMovie
software perhaps?), support for digital cameras and
scanners, System File Protection, driver signing (if
you use Windows 2000 you'll know this can be a pain),
Windows Restore for restoring old configurations (good
news), friendlier Windows Update feature, and voice
chat support for games - the value of these last two
has to be pretty questionable, but that's just my
opinion!
I'd suggest that for
serious users an upgrade to Win2K would represent
better value (and if you want to use dual processors
it's a must). But in any case don't take my word
for it, read the Geek.com
article.
You can also find some
WinME benchmarks
here by Tom's Hardware. Interestingly enough
Microsoft's spell checker doesn't recognise "iMac"...
strange that.

There's also some News Of The Weird just in, I'll post

you're going to love this...
Dual 1Gig
Pentium III at the TechZone
Remember
what I said on Wednesday in the Thunderbird 1.1GHz
review, about setting up a dual 1.1 Gig Athlon system?
Well someone in the US of A has obviously been reading
the news on RipNet (well maybe). TechZone have a
pair of P III 700s in an MSI 694 board running at
1Gig. Yours for a mere $1095 - there's always
something to spoil it isn't there? Read the full
spec in their article, complete with Sandra
benchmarks that will make you green with envy.
Microsoft
court case - the never ending story?
An appeals court has
issued deadlines for Microsoft and its government
opponents to submit their arguments. Microsoft
has until Nov. 27 to file its primary brief for its
appeal. The US Government's main brief is due by Jan.
12, with Microsoft delivering a reply document by Jan.
29. The case should then be heard on Feb. 26 and 27.
Don't expect an early, or clear for that matter,
outcome from this one. The full story is here

Friday
13th lived up to expectations unfortunately.
Still at least my PC hasn't crashed......yet.
Here's the news before everything goes horribly wrong.
AMD
extending lead over Intel?
Although
AMD haven't officially released them yet, the 1.2GHz
Athlon and the 800MHz Duron are both already for sale
in the States. I don't know if they're available
here in the UK yet, but at the prices they are selling
for it may well be worth the hassle of getting one
imported - these chips are cheap! You can get
all the gory details here
from CNet News. Be interesting to see what
Intel's response is.
ELSA
GLADIAC ULTRA 64MB GeForce2 Ultra
Yes yes
I know, yet another video card review.
There's just so many of them out there!
AnandTech take a look at this latest offering - read
their new article
to see what they thought.
Something
for the overclocker
Hexus.Net
got their hot little hands on a Celeron II 566 clocked
to 850MHz. Remember that now the Abit
VP6 has hit town (and they're already for sale in
the UK) all you dual processor types can finally run a
pair of Celeron IIs... which is nice. Here's
the lowdown
That's
all for today I'm afraid, haven't had the time (or
inclination) to update any of the other pages yet.
Hopefully I'll get a bit more done over the weekend.
Also I'm still waiting for the duff digital camera I
was sent to be replaced. Once that happens you
may see the photo page start to take shape.
Stranger things have happened...

October 2000 |
SMP
Capable Athlons announced
If dual
processing (SMP) is your thing then until now you've
had two basic ways of achieving it. Dual
Pentiums, provided you have an understanding bank
manager, or dual Celerons, (the cheaper option),
provided you don't mind putting up with less than
cutting edge performance (having said that see the benchmarks
on the overclocking page - just because they're
Celerons doesn't mean they have to be slow...)
But now
it seems there is a new contender. AMD have show
cased a dual Athlon workstation, so maybe now all you
dual fans can enjoy Pentium levels of performance at
something approaching Celeron prices. Doubtless
there will be some teething troubles to iron out, but
it's still an exciting development. See this article
to find out more.
Thunderbird
1.1GHz review at Chick's Hardware
Here's
a taster of the review :
"AMD
recently released their 1.1GHz Athlon Thunderbird
processor, which was meant to be the speed king. But,
Intel wouldn't let that happen. So, they released the
1.13GHz Pentium3 processor, which would have been the
fastest consumer CPU out at the time. But, the
processor was recalled due to stability issues, and
now AMD's 1.1Ghz Thunderbird is speed king once again.
How much faster is this processor than AMD and Intel's
1Ghz counterparts?"

Video card

3D card
technology is advancing at a breakneck pace. Buy
the fastest card on the market and it will probably be
overtaken before you have a chance to install it.
The choice is bewildering ( and some of the prices are
mind boggling). Here are just a few of the
latest cards for all you gamers to dream about.
Hercules 3D
Prophet II Ultra
Electric
blue, lightning fast, even the memory chips have heat
sinks on them.
"
When we compare results with it's predecessors we can
immediately see by the tech specs that this videocard
is a gamers wet dream. With 64MB 460 MHz memory the
videocard has a memory bandwidth of 7.4Gigabyte per
second. That's roughly 2 Gigabyte/sec more than the
GF2 GTS. Furthermore the Ultra will be capable of
processing 1000 million pixels per second, 200 Million
more than the GF2 GTS. Finally when we take a look at
the amount of polygons per second then we'll see an
increase of 6 million polygons/sec more then the GF2
GTS at a rock solid 31 Million Polygons/sec. Amazed by
the numbers ?"

Back again.
Slight tweaks to some of the pages, SETI stats
updated, and the Strange

Also I've reduced the size of the background image so
hopefully you'll find that the pages load faster.
And now for something completely different...
How far
would you trust Windows?
Probably
not as far as the US Navy apparently does, I'd hazard
a guess. Mr. Gates' finest products are to be
used as the command and control system of a new
nuclear aircraft carrier (I kid you not). CVN 77
will start building in February 2001, with a planned
commissioning date in 2008.
'Windows for Warfare' will run communications,
aircraft and weapons launchers, and ship's
electronics.
The carrier is being built by Newport News
Shipbuilding - interestingly enough Bill Gates owns
eight per cent of the yard. Read the
full story on The Register.

I
trust Windows 2000 with my website, but with a 100,000
ton ship full of missiles? Errrr..... Mind
you they are calling their next carrier the USS
Ronald Reagan, so I suppose anything's possible...

A quiet news day I'm
afraid. The sun actually made a brief appearance
down here so thought I'd better make the most of it.
However there are a couple of snippets you may find
interesting....
Pentium 4
claims - to be taken with a large pinch of salt?
Tom's
Hardware are running an article on the P4
(remember that these are the same people who provided
the evidence that helped force Intel's somewhat
embarrassing recall of the 1.13Gig Pentium III).
They aren't convinced by Intel's performance claims
for the 1.4GHz Pentium 4. After reading the
article I have to say I agree with them! See
for yourself
SharkyExtreme.com
These chaps have a
couple of interesting articles today. The first
gave me something of a dilemma as it's to do with
overclocking - so do I put it here on the news page or
on the overclocking
page? In the end I couldn't decide so it's on
both.
The article runs a
Duron 700 head to head with a Celeron 700 (Coppermine
core). How did they fare? See the results here

They've also taken a
look at the ASUS
V7700 Deluxe, latest in the new generation of
NVidia GeForce cards. The article has a stack of
benchmarks under both Windows 98SE and Windows 2000,
so there's plenty of info to help you to decide where
to spend all your hard-earned cash.

My
personal opinion will not please Mr. Gates I'm afraid.
If you're a Windows 98 user then most of the added

but if you simply must upgrade then read this review

Well the weekend has
finally arrived and there I was hoping the Net would
be quiet....unfortunately a whole shedload of news is
out there and I really ought to point some of it out
to you!
Napster -
no such thing as bad publicity!
That old maxim seems to
be holding true for Napster.com, currently embroiled
in a major court case in the States. Researchers
estimated that an average of 640, 000 people (yes
that's not a typo) were using Napster at any given
time last month. Looks like people are taking my
advice to download the software just in case (or maybe
they read it somewhere else...)
Whichever is the case
you can get the software from Napster
and read the full story here

CNet.news

Maxtor the biggest hard drive manufacturer on the
planet, overtaking arch-rivals Seagate. So what
will storage prices do now? I'm afraid your
guess is as good as mine.
Savage
Zone Global Win FAC08 Video Chipset Cooler
If
you've ever tried your hand at overclocking your CPU
you'll know that heat can be a major issue. The
same applies if you try tweaking your graphics card;
although many new cards ship with a heatsink and fan
you can now buy your own add-ons. Savage Zone

types GlobalWin. Here's

Still making gradual
progress with the site. The overclocking
page is coming along nicely and I hope to upload
it soon. I'm also changing the menus on the
sub-pages, and trying to figure out how to add my own
animated gifs (as opposed to the various affiliate ads
you'll see dotted around). If anyone can point
me in the right direction I'd be very grateful -
obviously it would be worth a mention on the site!
And now back to the
news....

Not much news lately
I'm afraid - only excuse is a very busy couple of days
at work! Managed to find out what the result of
the Napster court case was yesterday though - and it
seems as if there has been no result so far. If
you like music, read on....
Napster -
to be or not to be?
Napster.com have been
much in the news lately, as they have been challenged
by some major companies over copyright infringement.
In a nutshell Napster has provided a central clearing
house to allow Net users to transfer files between
their computers.
Unsurprisingly the vast
majority of these files have been mp3 formats that
people have uploaded - believe me it's a great way of
retrieving the years old tracks you thought you'd lost
forever when your hi-fi chewed up that worn out tape!
Just type in the track you're after, select a speedy
download location (connection speeds are listed in the
search results), retrieve the mp3, sit back and enjoy.
You can download the required software here
(for the time being anyway....)
So far I've only come
across one track which Napster couldn't find for me,
and I'm far too embarrassed to tell you what it was
(but if anyone has Woman in Winter by The Skids then
drop me a line!)
Equally unsurprising I
suppose that some big music companies are up in arms
about seeing a lot of their hard-earned (?) royalties
disappearing into the ether. And so we have
another in what will probably be a long string of
court cases to decide the fate of peer-to-peer
technology.
Salon.com have a report
on yesterday's hearing, here's a snip :
"First things first:
It's still unclear whether the judges will rule in
favour of a preliminary injunction, shutting Napster
down until a full trial resolves the case. (That
decision could take as long as 30 to 60 days, or it
could come this week.)"
Part of the defence
argument has been that shutting down Napster for using
peer-to-peer technology to infringe copyrights will
deprive the public of something that could also be
used for non-infringing purposes. Sounds fair to
me. Read the full article here
CNet News also have
some coverage :
"Update :
SAN FRANCISCO -- A panel of appellate judges harshly
grilled lawyers for both Napster and the recording
industry before adjourning without a decision today in
the latest round of a closely watched legal clash that
pits the Internet against copyright laws.......The
court has no deadline to deliver its decision; it
could rule as early as this week. In the meantime,
Napster can continue to operate normally."
So
grab those tracks while you still can!
